5th Graders did such a fantastic job creating these op art paper cone drawings!!! I’m super proud of their hard work!!!
Students LOVED it too and couldn’t believe it could be created using just sharpies, and colored pencils!
This lesson took about 5 (40 minute) art classes to complete.
ON DAYS 1 and 2: Students were introduced to various OP Art by artists Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley, and learned what Op art was (Optical Illusion Art) with a quick slideshow of work.
Six straight lines that intersect at the same spot, were drawn ahead of time on 80# 10×10″ paper for each student with a ruler; Creating 12 “slices” in total.
Students followed along with me while I demonstrated under the document camera how to draw alternating curving lines within each pie slice, starting in the center.
Then they labeled every other slice with a “B” lightly in pencil, to mark that space as black.
Students then started tracing over the smallest slices labeled “B” in the center, using an extra fine point Sharpie, then filled in.
As areas got larger, kids switched to a Fine Point Sharpie, (since it has a thicker tip), and filled in the rest.
ON DAY 3, I reviewed the element of art VALUE with students and showed them how to create subtle value changes within each pie slice with colored pencils.
Students used a white colored pencil in the black areas first to create highlights, pressing hard with the white colored pencil down the middle, creating a bright white strip. Then as they drew from the middle outward, to each side, they pressed lighter and lighter, leaving the sides black.
Then, using a black colored pencil in just the white areas, they drew darkest along the sides and gradually pressed lighter and lighter towards the center—leaving the center strip white.
This lesson ties in nicely (and is a great precursor) to the grid drawing lesson that occurs later on in the year!

Hello again everybody! Sorry for the long hiatus….. I meant to post this over a month ago when school was just out, but things have been pretty busy around here (and by busy I mean basically just totally chillin out and relaxing focusing on family, friends and my health—-but c’mon, can ya blame me?! It is summer break after all!
But back to the art lesson I’m posting about—-Grid drawings inspired by the amazing artist Chuck Close!
This was my last art lesson of the school year for 5th grade. I have taught this lesson now for 5 years (4 years at the schools I’m teaching in now, and 1 year within another district). I think it’s one of the more challenging lessons for 5th grade.
The images I print out aren’t super easy and although students have a choice on what image they want to draw, the lesson requires a lot of attention to detail and focus. Usually it takes students about 6 (sometimes even 7 (40 minute) classes to complete.
So with that in mind, I have NO IDEA why I planned on teaching it with only about 4 art classes left in the school year…. (you’d think by now I’d of realized doing so would mean kids probably wouldn’t finish. Well… that is what happened. BUT—art isn’t always about the final product. It’s about the PROCESS. Learning about new techniques, learning about different artists, creative decision-making, discovering things about yourself, learning from mistakes and persevering through challenges.
Many students did finish, and I’d say most were probably ½ way finished. I DID however, have them draw on WAY smaller paper. In previous years kids drew on 9×12” or 8×10”, but this time round, I had them draw on 5×7” to help speed things up a bit, while still keeping the same learning goals in mind.
Students worked so hard and I’m truly impressed with their beautiful drawings! Even if unfinished.
Ok, sorry….that was a lot of text to read… so here’s the artwork!! 🙂
Students selected one black and white photo of an animal. They could choose from about 15 different pictures.
I looked for images on Google that had a variety of value changes, were challenging enough in that they had some nice details, but tried to find ones with a simple background. Then I printed each of them as a 5×7” on 8.5” x11” printer paper.
When making a selection, I laid out each image in stacks of about 10 along a long table, then called groups of kids up (5 or 6 kids at a time) to make a choice.
Students used a 1” strip of cardboard to create their grids. I’ve had them use actual rulers before, but it proved to be too tricky getting accurate measurements and straight lines.
They drew a grid on their chosen black and white animal picture, then numbered each square, then drew the same exact grid on a piece of 5×7” drawing paper and numbered that grid as well.
Here’s some pics of students doing just that!
I explained to draw very lightly on the white drawing paper (so later on the grid lines and numbers wouldn’t show as much) but they could draw pressing much harder on their black and white animal pic in order to see the grid lines and numbers better.
To help students draw with a lighter touch, I showed them how to hold the pencil so their fingers gripped near the eraser rather than towards the pencils tip. The closer your fingers are towards the tip of the pencil, the more likely it is you will draw darker lines.
Once their grids were drawn and numbered, they drew just the contour lines of their animal, while observing just one box at a time. Like so…..
Once all the contour lines are complete, we reviewed what VALUE meant and after doing a demo under the doc camera, they started shading using various drawing pencils. I had them use just 2B, 3B, 4B and 6B.
I also had small handouts to refer to on a value scale with references on what pencil would probably work best for each value within their picture.
We also reviewed how you can change the value of the pencil marks by simply pressing harder or lighter as well.
Students also learned how to use a TORTILLION or aka a blending stump to soften/blur lines and create lighter values.
You can see the tortillion (not tortilla! Tortillion I joked with the kids) on this students picture of a giraffe.
Kids were amazed at how much detail they acheived and how accurate they could draw what they were seeing—-just by simply slowing down, and really paying attention to all the little details and nuances within each and every square!!

LOVE, LOVE LOVE THESE!! This is a new lesson I introduced this year for 5th grade and it’s definitely a keeper!! Thank you Painted Paper Art for this wonderful lesson idea!
These are created by 5Y, 1 (of my 5) 5th grade classes! (Other classes are going on day 2 of the lesson later on in the week). It’s a 3 day art lesson (40 minutes each) and incorporates ALL the Elements of Art (value, shape, line, color, form, space, and texture!)
HERE ARE A FEW CLOSE-UPS OF INDIVIDUAL NESTS!
DAY 1:
Students created the nest using oil pastels on a 6×6″ sheet of manila tagboard. They drew a large circle with pencil, then chose whatever color blue they wanted, to fill in the background.
They then drew a small black circle in the center, a loop of dark brown around the black circle, then looped various shades of brown oil pastel within the remaining part of the nest, layering as they went around. After that they drew short, curved lines extending outside the nest with brown, to create little pieces of hay or sticks sticking out from the nest.
Students then used various shades of yellow and golds to overlap the brown, until the manila paper was completely covered with oil pastels. As a final step with oil pastels, students used black to lightly draw circles close together extending outward from the center, to create the illusion of space and the nest going inward in the center.
For the last step on day 1, students glued on strips of pre-cut, painted papers all around the nest, to add texture!
DAY 2:
On the second day of the lesson, students shaped and created 3 eggs out of model magic air dry clay and glued them on in the center of their nests with tacky glue. Then they glued down 8-10 small twigs using tacky glue to add even more texture to their nests! (BTW- Twigs were collected while walking my dog in the park on a previous day. With only 7 more art classes remaining before summer break, (although it might have been fun), I didn’t want students to spend an art class searching around the school for them!!)
I love the various shades of blue in this one!
I have to say, I REALLY LOVE tacky glue!! I’ve used it for so many art lessons recently and it’s WAAAAAY better than regular old white school glue! It adheres quickly (which is super important for this lesson) and best of all—dries clear!
These were all set aside to completely dry in Mason paper box tops until the following week!
DAY 3:
Students painted their eggs using liquid tempera (students could choose from a variety of blue/ blue-green paints).
They had the option to then add spots of white and brown speckles using the end of a paintbrush handle.
Students did a wonderful job creating their beautiful bird nests and eggs, I couldn’t WAIT to hang them all up!!!!
I hot glued twigs to create their sign and added some colorful cupcake liners for flowers! More nests to come SOON to fill in the empty spaces on this bulletin board!!!

2nd Graders are learning about foreground, middle ground and background and how to create a sense of space in art for this lesson. The photos above are of student artwork from last year. 4th Grade: ENLARGED FLOWER DRAWINGS
4th graders are currently working on this lesson inspired by the artist Georgia O’Keeffe! Photos above are by 4th graders from last year. Students enlarge a section of a flower while observing photos, using oil pastels. I LOVE this lesson and how we abstract the flower by zooming in and cropping just a section of a flower!

5th Grade: FALLING FOR FORESHORTENING
5th Graders are currently working on these fun perspective drawings! These photos above are by 5th graders from last year and previous years. They learn about the type of perspective “foreshortening”, and draw the person’s expression to match what they are falling into, add details to the hands and feet and create a background using colored pencils. SPECIAL EDUCATION: MIXED MEDIA FLOWER AND BUGS
Students created these adorable flowers and bugs using cut paper and cupcake liners! Kids glued green construction paper for the grass and flowers stem and leaves, then painted ovals and/or circles on separate paper with tempera paint to create the bugs. Then they painted a cut paper plate for the large flower head with liquid tempera paint.
On day 2, they glued on their paper plate flower head, then a cupcake liner for the center. They then drew legs for their bugs with marker, cut out the bugs and added them to their flower picture with google eyes!
Once finished, I showed them how to draw flowers in grass and they colored in crayon!

1st Grade:
Mixing Primary colors to create Secondary colors
This is a 1 day lesson. Then in the following class, students will be creating “Mondrian Collages” using primary colors.
2nd Grade:
Finish Monet Inspired 3-D Water Lilies (2M and 2D)
If finished- “Catching Snowflakes” portraits are up next!
3rd Grade:
Finish “Self-Portraits with Personal Symbols” oil pastel drawings
THEN….. Create a “3-D Winter Mug”!!

Students did such a fantastic job creating these beauties I can’t help but post a ton!!
Day 1 (of 2)
Step 1: Draw a wavy line in the middle of a piece of 12×18” black construction paper using pencil. Then go over your line with colored OIL PASTEL (can be 1 color/or a line of a combination of colors!)
Step 2: On a separate piece of black construction paper (cut to 6”x18”) Trace 6 bulbs using a bulb tracer with pencil. (I created these bulb tracers ahead of time from thin cardboard sheets found from the back of printmaking foam board packages-great way to recycle and it’s free!)
Step 3: Outline each bulb first, using oil pastel, then fill in -pressing hard- so the color is more vibrant. Leave the rectangular base (bulb socket) black. (***I have small scrap pieces of black paper for students to test out colors first- to see if they like the way it looks on black paper -before using on final bulbs)
Then add a small white curved line near the top to make it look like it’s shiny and reflecting light, a “cursive L shape” for the filament near the base, and 4 white straight lines in the bulbs base using a white oil pastel.
Step 4: Finish the remaining 5 bulbs the same way, using different colors. (If you want- they can be all the same color or a mix with some the same color)
Day 2:
Step 1: Trace 6 bulbs along wire line where you want them with pencil using the bulb tracer.
Step 2: For each bulb tracing on the wire line-using a white CHALK pastel, draw a thick white line just inside the pencil line a bit, on each of the bulb tracings. Do this with ALL 6 bulbs.
Then, smudge with your finger going outward (going away from the bulb and smudging in one direction) to create a glow effect!
Step 3: Then using the same color CHALK PASTEL as each of your OIL PASTEL bulbs—go over the same white line with colored CHALK pastel thickly. Smudge outward again with your finger. Do all 6 bulbs with the chalk on the black paper.
(To avoid blending colors, use a different finger for each color when smudging).
Step 4: Cut out each colored OIL PASTEL bulb from the 6”x18” strip of black paper.
Each time you cut one out, glue the back of it using a glue stick, and glue down in place over the traced bulb with chalk smudges- (glue down matching each bulbs color with chalk pastel smudges). I have students glue them down immediately after cutting so cut bulbs wouldn’t get mixed up with other students bulbs.
And there you have it!! So easy and so Fun!!

After kids got their papers, I demonstrated under a document camera as they followed along with me for the first step.
Students then drew a series of concentric curved lines alternating the direction of the curve within each “slice”.
Once finished with that step, students labeled every OTHER slice with a “B” lightly in pencil, to mark that space as black.
This step helps speed things along as kids color in– (just locate the ones labeled “B”), AND reduces any potential mistakes while using Sharpie.
Once that’s all set, students then started tracing over the smallest slices labeled “B” in the center, using a extra fine point Sharpie, (so it wouldn’t bleed too much into the small white sections), then filled in.
As areas got larger, kids switched to a Fine Point Sharpie, (since it has a thicker tip), and colored in the rest.
These 2 steps took about 2- (40 minute) classes to complete.
ON DAY 3, I discussed the element of art VALUE with students and showed them how to create subtle value changes.
Then I demonstrated the next step —using a black colored pencil in the white areas to create shading and shadows, and a white colored pencil in the black areas to create highlights.
Before students started this on their own artwork, I had them practice first on black and white papers.
I explained to students it’s important to draw the lines close together.
It’s also key to press harder with the white in the center, and gradually get lighter and lighter as the white gets closer to the edges of each slice, leaving a bit of black showing along the sides.
Then, using the black colored pencil in just the white areas, they drew darkest along the sides and gradually pressed lighter and lighter towards the center—leaving the center strip white!
Students loved seeing the 3D effect start to emerge!!

5th Grade– 3D OP ART paper cone drawings!

5th graders are currently learning about OP Art and looked at artwork by OP artists Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley. They are drawing 3D paper cones using black sharpie, then will learn about the element of art value, and will add white colored pencil for highlights and black colored pencil for shading.
This lesson is going to be a great introduction to creating subtle value changes and will scaffold nicely into their grid drawing lesson later on in the year (see under 5th grade art lessons in the menu to check their AHH-maaazing grid drawings!!!!!)
I’m SOO excited about this lesson, and can’t wait to see their finished masterpieces!

4th Grade– Victorian Architecture!

Students are currently learning about architecture and the key elements that create Victorian style architecture! Students are also incorporating they’re math skills using rulers to create acute or obtuse angles for their gables, and various geometric shapes for their house! Students will learn about monochromatic color schemes and color in their Victorian homes with colored pencils.
I can’t wait to see all the amazing houses students will create!

3rd Grade– Self-portraits with personal symbols!

Students learn about the artist Frida Kahlo, her self-portrait paintings, and what a symbol means. They’ll also learn how to draw facial features and learn blending techniques using oil pastels to create and blend colors together that best match their unique skin tone!

2nd Grade– 3D Water Lily inspired by Claude Monet!

Students are currently learning about the artist Claude Monet and Impressionism. Students will learn the term mixed-media and create a 3D flower out of painted paper, felt, tagboard, and tissue paper!
I’m super excited about this new lesson I’m integrating into 2nd grade!! Kids have begun the painting process for this lesson at Amvet and will create the lily pad next! I can’t wait to see their beautiful results!!

1st Grade– Not So Scary Scarecrow Collage!

Students are learning what a landscape is and looked at landscape paintings by Vincent van Gogh, Grant Wood, and David Hockney for inspiration. Students used a variety of line to create details in their own landscapes and learn what the term collage is when they add their scarecrows!

In the beginning of every year I have all my students create their own sketchbook, that will be used periodically throughout the whole year.
Each grade has a different drawing lesson to create a cover for their sketchbooks. Sketchbooks will be used to free draw in if kids finish a lesson early, to practice drawing before creating a final version for a lesson, to copy down information that they’ve learned about a particular lesson, and to experiment in with various art materials.
5th grade – Superhero Sketchbook Covers
5th graders looked at a variety of superhero comic book cover illustrations and then came up with their own unique superheroes demonstrating their superpowers. They had a choice of creating sidekicks, whether they wanted to include a villain and created a background scene. Drawings were then outlined in black sharpie and colored in with a choice of marker or colored pencil or both.
I love this drawing lesson because it allows so much creativity! Each one is so unique!
AS YOU’LL SEE BELOW, SOME STUDENTS ARE STILL WORKING, BUT COULDN’T WAIT TO SHOW THEM! I WILL RE-POST THEIR FINAL VERSIONS ONCE COMPLETE LATER.

4TH GRADE – INITIAL DESIGN WITH ANALOGOUS
COLORS
For this lesson, students created a tracer of their initials from manila tagboard using block letters. Students could draw their letters on the tagboard either stacked on top of one another, side by side, diagonally, and could flip them backwards.
Once cut out as one piece, they traced their initials at least 8 times, creating an interesting design and went over their lines with black sharpie.
They then drew a background design with pencil, and colored in only the background with markers using analogous colors, leaving their initials white so they popped from the colorful background.

3RD GRADE- ART TOOL SKETCHBOOK COVERS
Third graders chose 1 art tool (they could choose from: scissors, hole punchers, staplers, tape dispensers, foam rollers, glue bottles, or paint bottles) and created observational drawings of their chosen tool from 4 different viewpoints (from the top, from the bottom, from the side, and from the front). Kids could also draw additional drawings of their tool once the 4 viewpoints were drawn and could draw some of them coming off the page or overlap some.
Once drawn in pencil, they outlined in sharpie and colored in using marker or colored pencils, or both.
3RD GRADERS WORKING ON THEIR ART!

2ND GRADE- WARM/COOL HANDS WITH PATTERNS
Second graders created a drawing of their hand with patterns inside their hand and in the background and then colored in using warm colors inside just the hand and cool colors only in the background (or vice versa) with marker.
This student is still coloring in, but is doing such a fantastic job had to post it! Nice work Milo!
(2nd graders are now working on their “Abstract self-portrait paintings!”)
UP NEXT!….MONET INSPIRED MIXED-MEDIA 3D WATER LILY
1ST GRADE- LINES THAT WIGGLE DRAWINGS
First graders listened to the fun story “Lines That Wiggle” by Candace Whitman. We then looked around the room and did a line scavenger hunt with our eyes!
Students drew at least 8 loopy, overlapping lines with pencil. We talked about how it kind of looked like a rollercoaster! We also discussed how when lines connect, it creates a shape! Students then outlined all their lines with black sharpie, and colored in each shape created with marker!
(1st Graders are currently working on their “Pumpkin’s Starry Night” lesson inspired by Van Gogh!)
